The Met and Manhattan
Day 2
On our second day in New York, we went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or just the Met), then spent the rest of the day discovering New York by foot, taking it slightly more slowly than the previous day!
The Met
The Met was founded in 1870 and now presents thousands of pieces of art from all over the world. Now, 150 years on, it welcomes millions of visitors each year, from New York and further abroad. The Met has two sites open to visitors- the main museum located on the fifth avenue, and the Met Cloisters. We didn’t visit the later- so see here for more information on what to see.
Back when we visited, the museum suggested visitors pay $25. However, later that year the policy changed and now the museum charges $25 for adult tickets, although New York State residents and some students can decide how much to pay (but need valid ID). More details on admission and to book tickets can be found here.
We spent a good few hours walking around. There is a lot to see at the Met- from Egyptian Art to Musical Instruments, and you can easily spend a whole day walking around. If you are keen to find out more on what you can visit and see a map of the museum click here.
During the time of our visit, we were lucky enough to visit the David Hockney exhibition, with many different pieces of work ranging from the well known paintings to more recent pieces and even video. Details on current exhibitions can be found here– well worth looking in advance to not miss anything during your visit!
There are a couple of places to grab something to eat- The Eatery on the group floor and the American Wing Cafe on the first floor. It’s also worth mentioning that the shop at the museum is also worth visiting-selling everything from jeweller to home decor and obviously books on art, sculptures and designers. We managed to get some nice Christmas decorations and a few other little souvenirs to bring back to London- you can browse the collection online here.
Walking around Manhattan
After our visit to the Met, we spent a few hours walking around Manhattan, checking out the Flatiron building, the Rockfeller Center and Times Square. One attraction we would highly recommend is seeing New York from above- either from the Top of the Rock or the Empire State building. Wally managed to do this prior to my arrival- and the views were incredible! Probably even more so at sunrise or sunset- but it might get busy!
We popped into Lillie’s Victorian Establishment (the one in Times Square) for a few drinks. This place was incredible, with stunning decor, architecture, and equally delicious drinks to match. Would definitely recommend this place for a few drinks. They also serve food (we didn’t have any as popped in just before dinner- but the food looked good from what we saw!) Check out their website here to see the menu and find out more.
We then finished the day off with dinner at a Thai Restaurant (Nuaa). Here, we had Blue Flower Thai Dumplings, which were just incredibly delicious, but unfortunately this restaurant has since closed. There are quite a number of other Thai restaurants around- so plenty of choice!
